When you love someone who carries deep trauma, you may find yourself carrying more than you realise.
You may become hyper-aware of their moods, sense shifts before a word is spoken, and unconsciously change your behaviour to keep the peace.
For highly sensitive people, this can sometimes feel especially intense. You may find yourself constantly responding to another person’s emotional atmosphere without consciously realising it.
Over time, prolonged exposure to intense emotional states may leave you feeling depleted, emotionally exhausted, disconnected, confused and extremely self-critical.
You may begin asking yourself:
- Why am I reacting this strongly?
- Why do my emotions feel so intense?
- Why is it becoming so difficult to regulate myself?
- Why does everything feel so emotionally and physically exhausting?
Perhaps the more important questions are:
What if the feelings, emotions and dysregulation I am experiencing are not entirely mine?
What if I am absorbing or mirroring something that the other is struggling to carry? So, does this mean you are now responsible for healing your loved one?
Or does protecting your own energy mean you have to abandon them?
The answer does not have to be either.
The deeper lesson may be learning how to remain connected to someone you love without losing your connection to yourself.
Let’s explore this further.
Can Our Energy Fields Become Entangled and Enmeshed?
Relationships naturally involve Energetic and emotional exchange.
We respond to facial expressions, tone of voice, body language, moods and the atmosphere around the people we live with. However, there is another dynamic that is less understood.
And that is the dynamic of Energetic exchanges, transfers and sometimes push/pull and grabs of the others’ energies.
Let me explain.
In a healthy relationship, each member maintains their own separate energetic field. There are energetic transfers but these are emotionally nourishing and more or less balanced between the members.
However, when there is unresolved trauma involved, the transfers can become imbalanced, with one member taking more Energy than they Give. And over time, this results in their fields becoming Entagled and Enmeshed.
In a state of Energetic Entanglement and Enmeshment:
-You may feel another person’s emotional state before they say anything.
-You may notice that your own mood changes when theirs changes.
-You may feel calm when they are calm, but suddenly anxious, heavy or unsettled when they become angry, withdrawn or emotionally overwhelmed.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that every emotion you experience belongs to someone else. Rather, it can be helpful to develop greater awareness of where your emotional responses are coming from.
Begin asking yourself:
What is mine?
What belongs to them?
What am I carrying that I never consciously chose to carry?
This awareness can create space between what you experience and how you respond.
Emotional Patterns Travel Through Families
Trauma is not always experienced as an individual story.
Families can carry patterns of fear, silence, survival, emotional suppression and hypervigilance across generations.
These patterns may be experienced as inherited emotional imprints — patterns that seem to exist within a family long before we consciously understand them.
For example, a family may develop patterns around avoiding difficult conversations, suppressing emotions, constantly anticipating danger, prioritising survival over rest, or taking responsibility for everyone else’s feelings.
Children can grow up learning these behaviours without anyone explicitly teaching them.
They simply become part of the emotional environment.
This is one reason healing can sometimes involve exploring not only our own personal story, but also the patterns we may have inherited through our family system.
Understanding these patterns can help us become more conscious of what we are continuing — and what we may choose to release.
The Invisible Emotional Labour
There is a type of exhaustion that is rarely understood or acknowledged:
Constantly managing someone else’s emotional environment.
You become the one who calms.
The one who understands.
The one who adjusts.
The one who avoids certain subjects.
The one who senses when something is about to change.
You may learn to read the smallest changes in someone’s voice, expression or behaviour.
Over time, this constant outward focus can gradually disconnect you from your own inner world.
You begin feeling everyone else’s energy before you feel your own.
Your attention becomes focused on managing the environment rather than understanding what is happening inside you.
You care for your Loved Ones and want to help.
You may begin with immense patience and understanding. However, with time, you notice:
- You have less energy.
- You feel numb.
- You become easily irritated.
- You stop knowing what you need.
- You feel disconnected from your own joy and from your body
This doesn’t necessarily mean you stopped caring.
It means you have given so much that your own energetic reservoirs have run dry.
When Their Energy Changes, You Feel It Too
One of the most confusing experiences can be the sudden change in emotional atmosphere.
One moment there is connection.
The next, withdrawal.
Anger.
Fear.
Silence.
Emotional flooding.
You may feel your energy levels suddenly drop and wonder:
“What’s happening to me? What did I do?”
However, the more important question is:
“What is happening here? Is this density mine?”
Understanding this difference can help you respond consciously rather than automatically.
You may begin reacting to the signs that precede your loved one’s emotional shifts.
Your body and energy may respond before your conscious mind understands why.
Learning to recognise these patterns can help you distinguish between:
Intuition and fear.
Your energy and another person’s energy.
Present-moment awareness and old conditioning.
You Are Allowed to Grieve
There can be grief in loving someone who is carrying unresolved trauma.
You may grieve the relationship that could have been.
You may grieve moments that were lost.
You may grieve the version of your relationship that could have been.
And you may even grieve the version of yourself you were before your life became centred around survival.
Your grief deserves acknowledgement.
You don’t have to deny it or hide it simply because someone else is hurting too.
It May Be Time to Give Yourself Permission – You Matter Too.
Energetic Boundaries Are Not Rejection
An energetic boundary does not mean:
“I don’t care about you.”
It means:
“I care about you, but I also honour my own energy.”
You can be compassionate without absorbing.
You can listen without carrying.
You can support without becoming responsible for another person’s emotional state.
You can love someone deeply while recognising that their healing journey ultimately belongs to them.
Healthy energetic boundaries create space for two people to exist as individuals while remaining connected.
You Can Love Without Losing Yourself
Loving someone who is healing from trauma can require enormous compassion.
But compassion does not mean energetic self-abandonment.
You can stand beside someone without standing inside their pain.
You can hold space without holding everything.
You can walk beside them without carrying their entire journey.
And you can protect your own energy while still loving deeply.
Your healing and their healing do not have to compete.
Sometimes, creating space for your own healing is what allows you to remain present with greater love, clarity and compassion.
You don’t have to carry everything to prove that you care.
You don’t have to become responsible for another person’s healing to prove your love for them.
Come Back to Your Own Energy
Sometimes healing begins with a simple question:
Where am I in all of this?
Energy healing can provide a space to reconnect with your own energy, strengthen your boundaries, release what you are carrying and return to your centre.
It is an invitation to reconnect with:
- Your body
- Your breath
- Your Soul
- Your Dreams
- All the things that make you feel alive
The intention is not to escape another person’s experience.
It is to remember your own.
If you feel emotionally depleted, disconnected from yourself, or need support for your energetic wellbeing, I can help. you build an energetic awareness and help you reconnect with yourself.
